I upgraded my machine not so long ago.
Needed a new case & GFX card.

Went for the Antec1200 & an ATI4870.
Whole system is water-cooled as I over-clock all my machines.

Well your first problem will be to find a 8800M GTX at all. There are not many shops you can buy mobile gpu's.
The next problem will be to find one for a decent price - I think you won't find one under 500€ probably even more.
Maybe a 8800M GTX won't fit your system because of different MXM modules. If you're lucky both run MXM II.
It's quite tricky to change a laptop gpu. You might screw your whole system. So be sure you know what you're doing before you start.

You could ask Dell to upgrade it but I doubt they will do that. Another chance woud be to find a shop who does that.

Why didn't you just buy a 1730 btw?

Well the XPS M1730 was MUCH more expensive, my laptop only cost €1000... if I wanted the same set up but with the 8800M gpu on the 1730 it would have costed me around €2500, which is crazy!

I guess i'll just have to stick to my standard gpu

Which MXM version is your 8600?


I found a 7950GTX. No DX10 but only topped by the 8800GTX and the 9800 GT/S / GTX. That was the GPU in my old laptop. Could run CoD4 on 1920x1200 and much details. It would be quite enough for source games.

But it's a MXM-III module and I think yours is a MXM-II. In fact lower MXM types can be mounted on higher types. Probably you would have to tweak around a bit to make it fit in but it should work.
You might get a problem with the termal interface mounting. You may read this for further information.
There's also a shop but all you can get there is a 8600M GT 512Mb for 250€. You may have a look at the HD 3650 256MB for 275€ the fastest card they offer.

You can find loads of 8600 GT's and GS's with 512Mb on ebay but that's not really an improvement since you need more MHz not Mb.
